Is It Legal To Gamble Online?

Online Gambling SoftwareIs It Legal To Gamble Online?

The question of whether it is legal to gamble online is one that has troubled many people for quite some years now, and has caused many online gambling sites to refuse to accept payments from US players.  This has had a dramatic effect on profits and advertising for many sites and even affected the major internet search providers Yahoo! and Google.

During 2006 the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act) was signed into law and prevented financial institutions transferring funds to online gambling sites.  A lot of the investment that had previously been going in to developing internet gambling sites was halted and re-directed to promoting European sites, where there were no such problems.

Due to the number of challenges regarding the rights of US citizens to gamble online there has been much debate and controversy over this law and there is some move to allow certain games, such as poker, bridge, and chess, to be re-categorised as games of skill rather than games of chance, which would then prevent them from being affected by this legislation.

Another alternative is to allow licenses to be granted to allow sites to be regulated and controlled, which would then give US players a chance to enter the market and take their chances along with the rest of the world.

There is huge controversy about the UIGEA legislation, but for the moment, US players can continue to gamble if they use a financial intermediary such as Neteller or Moneybookers.  This way financial transactions move from their bank to an intermediary before going on to a gambling site, avoiding the problem, and therefore it is completely legal for US citizens in most states to gamble online.
