Roulette GamblingHistory of Roulette

If you’ve ever wondered about the history of Roulette and how the game came about you wouldn’t be alone. There are several theories about the origins of Roulette, however none have yet been definitively proved. As the word Roulette literally means ‘small wheel’ in French it’s not surprising that many theories about its history revolve around France as being the historic home of the game.

It is thought that Blaise Pascal invented the wheel at some point around the 17th century, which makes sense given his many talents included mathematics, philosophy and physics. These are certainly a set of qualities that would have given him the ideal background to consider the development of the Roulette wheel. However, as gambling was illegal at this time in France the game became more popular in Germany, before new laws prevented gambling here. Finally in Monte Carlo the wheel was given a place in history and its popularity grew and grew, making it one of the most popular online casino games today.

When the game became popular in America the wheel changed slightly with the addition of an extra 0 in the form of a 00 pocket. This gave the casinos an extra advantage over the player and accounts for the choice of Roulette games in many casinos. European players generally prefer to play with the European wheel and American players tend to prefer to play with the American wheel – probably simply because this is the version with which they are most familiar.

With the advent of online casinos the geographical preferences could change, however with many US players finding it difficult to play online this may take time to change. Software developers have come up with ways to play Roulette online, using random number generators to determine the pocket the ball will fall in to, and amazing graphics to allow the player to feel as if they really are present at the spinning of a wheel.

Roulette GamblingHow to Play Roulette

This basic guide is for those that are not sure the rules and regulations of a game of Roulette. We will explain how Roulette is played and the different types of bets that are allowed.

The game of Roulette began in France. And the goal for this game is to pick the winning number. First, let me explain the two different types of wheels that are used for Roulette. There is the European wheel, which has which has thirty-seven slots that are numbered from 0 to 36. Now, the American wheel has thirty-eight numbers because of the double zero slot (00). The layout for Roulette involves two betting areas; the inside and the outside. The inside betting area contains the numbers on the layout. But the outside betting area has boxes for columns, black/red, and odd/even. The numbers on the inside betting area are laid out in twelve rows with three numbers each.

The dealer, as always, is extremely important to the game. He/She is responsible for keeping the wheel moving at all times. Once the bets are placed, the dealer will spin the ball in the opposite direction of the wheel; this causes the ball to jump around before finally landing on a spot. You are not allowed to place a bet on that number again until the dealer has removed the marker from the wheel. Always make sure to wait until the dealer has removed the marker before placing another bid.

Roulette GamblingComparing European Roulette and American Roulette Games

The game of roulette is a favorite game located in casinos throughout the world. However, what many individuals might not know is that there are different kinds of roulette games. In fact, the different games are going to vary, depending where in the world an individual is at. There are three basic formats, including American, European and French. French is essential European with only a slight variation, so it isn’t all that much different, but still valuable to point out, incase a gambler finds themselves in a French based casino. However, with the major differences between European and American, it is necessary to know what the differences are and how it affects the game play.

In American roulette there are 38 numbers located on the wheel, ranging from 1 to 36 a 0 and a 00. When it comes to European roulette there are 37 numbers on the wheel, ranging from 1 to 36 with a 0. As for French roulette, it has the same number of slots on the wheel and a single 0, although the playing field is a bit different, which can change up the way the ball rolls on the wheel.

In the American version of roulette, there are multicolored chips and a player is able to place their bets on different squares. The multicolored chips makes it much easier to identify different bets, the value of the chips and the chips are purchased directly from the dealer, who is able to hand out the chips as these chips are typically not located in any other game found in the casino. This way, the chips are directly exchanged back with the dealer when they leave, as the chips cannot be used in other games. However, with the European form of roulette, a standard chip is used that is also found throughout the rest of the casino.

The way the bets are taken away is also slightly different, as in America, after the bets are placed and the round is complete, the dealer (or assistant) collects the lost bets by hand while in Europe, a croupier takes away the bets with a spade, which they drag across the table. This provides a bit more elegance to the game in Europe but there is a reason behind why it is done by hand in the United States. With every individual using specific chips that are directly for them, the dealer must pick them up and move them back to the better or collect the chips themselves. However, with the European method, as the chips are all the same, it can be collected quickly with the spade.

With European forms of roulette, there are two playing fields for the roulette table. Up to 16 individuals are able to play on a table at once and there are three individuals from the casino who work the game. One individual throws the ball and the other work the field and collect the chips. In the United States, a single individual works the table and the ball, although he has an assistant that sorts out the different chips. However, only six individuals at a time are able to play on the table at once.

The behavior around a roulette table is different as well between the two forms. In Europe, the dress code is generally rather strict, so individuals typically wear suites and dresses, while in the United States, there typically is no form of dress code, so there is any sort of banter and clothing available along the side of these tables. In the United States, a tip off of winnings is often given to the roller, although this is not generally offered in European forms of Roulette, sans French roulette. With the French style of roulette, it is typically obligatory, so tips are almost always automatically taken out of the winnings.

There are a few additional rules that separate the two forms, although these are only going to be really noticed by seasoned roulette players. In Europe, if an individual poets on an equal chance (such as red/black or even/odd, for example) and the ball lands on 0, the bet is placed in prison but not removed off of the board. If the ball lands on a 0 the next roll though, then the bet is lost. In Europe, it is possible to call bets out as well, which is not available in the United States. The advantage of a European casino is 2.7 percent, while American casinos has a 5.26 percent chance of winning all bets.

Roulette GamblingRoulette Bets

Now you need to know how to place a bet during a game of Roulette. Here is a list of a few different types of bets that are allowed for the game of Roulette:
• Inside Bets
• Straight Up
• Split Bet
• Street Bets (aka Line Bet)
• Corner Bet
• Basket Bet
• Double Street Bet
• Outside Bets
• Red/Black or Odd/Even
• Dozens Bet
• Column Bet

There are several different combinations for an inside bet. You can bet it “straight up”, which is a bet on a single number and the pay is 35 to 1. Or with an inside bet you can split it between two numbers, which is a split bet, but the pay off is only 17 to 1.

Continuing with inside bets, there is another bet you can place which is the street bet (aka line bet) and this is when you place your chip on the vertical line that separates the inside and outside betting areas on the wheel. Now the quad bet only pays 8 to 1. This type of bet happens when you place your chip so that it is touching all the corners of the four numbers you want to place your bet on.

A basket bet is five number bet on zero. For example you can place a basket bet using double zero and 1-2-3. This type of bet would only pay 6 to 1. A bet called a double street bet is very similar to the basket bet, but it is six numbers and pays 5 to 1.

Now it’s time to get into outside bets. An outside bet is any bets placed on the boxes surrounding the numbers. A black/red or odd/even bets are all even money bets. A dozens bet is a little more complicated in that it is a bet made on twelve consecutive numbers. For a dozens bet, you place your chip on the boxes marked 1-12, 13-24, or 25-36. A dozens bet pays 2 to 1, and if either the zero for double-zero come up you lose. The last type of bet for an outside bet is called a column bet. This bet also is twelve numbers on the wheel, but they consist of numbers from the three vertical columns and these bets are placed in the boxes at the bottom of the layout. The column bet has the same pay as the dozens bet (2 to 1).

Roulette Tips

Now, here are some tips from players with years of experience:
• If there is a chip on the number you want, you are allowed to stack your chips on top of theirs
• You are allowed to place bets after the dealer has spun the ball. He will always announce when bets are no longer allowed to be placed.
• There is no “sure fire” system to win at Roulette. Never waste money on buying this “systems”.

Roulette GamblingRoulette Strategies

Roulette is one of the staples of casinos all over the world, but it is also one of the hardest games to win at. No matter the mathematical spread someone chooses to employ, the house is always going to have the advantage and over the long term the player is going to end up the loser. Even Albert Einstein, after extensive study, claimed that the only way to come out ahead at a roulette table was to steal money when the dealer wasn’t looking. That said, there are still strategies for playing a winning game of roulette.

Play European Roulette

The best way to play roulette is to pick the game with the best odds. American roulette gives two spots to the house, which provides a more than 5% advantage to the house. Not good by anyone’s standards. European roulette gives the house only a single spot, increasing a player’s odds and cutting the house’s percentage in half. That’s the first step toward coming away a winner.

Know Your Odds

There are a lot of so-called systems out there which promise roulette winnings. Do not buy them; these books are half-truths at best. On a long enough timeline, or even a particularly short one, the house always wins. It’s why roulette is always the first game a casino puts in, and it’s always a loyal standby. Players need to know that going in.

The best odds a player is likely to get are betting on the even bets; even, odd, high, low, red and black. These bets only pay on a 1:1 basis, but they also have a 45% chance per spin, which is some of the best options one can find. Players can also bet on a spread of numbers, covering a portion of the wheel, and then if they win the payout will be 35:1, which is what happens when someone wins on an individual number. However, the odds of whether or not the ball will drop in a given spread still have to be calculated individually before a player decides to take individual numbered bets.

Know How Odds Work

There are a lot of fallacies among gamblers, and they all seem to come into play when it comes to roulette. This game is, first and foremost, a game of chance. That means there’s absolutely no skill to it, and there’s no system that can win the game in a player’s favor. That’s the first thing to remember.

The next thing players have to learn is that every spin of the wheel is unique; no one spin influences any other spins. If one puts his or her bet onto red, the odds are 45%. Whether the ball lands on red or not, the next spin is still going to be a 45% chance of winning. Past spins do not affect future spins, the way that odds would change with a deck of cards where, because some cards have been removed, the odds are altered. A roulette wheel has the same odds every spin. Ignoring this is often referred to as the gambler’s fallacy, where a player will think that because the wheel has landed 12 times in a row on red, that the next spin has to be red because it’s part of a streak. Or, alternatively, there have been so many of one kind of spin, that the next one just has to be different. The odds don’t change.

Take Your Emotions Out of It

Gambling is a tough recreation and an even harder profession, and roulette already puts players at a disadvantage. In order to come out ahead a gambler needs to keep his or her head, and to take both ego and emotion out of the equation. Emotional involvement can lead to someone playing long past when he or she should, and that can lead to big losses.

The best plan when it comes to roulette is to set an upper limit and a lower limit. When one loses money to the lower limit, or wins money to the upper limit, it’s time to quit playing. This kind of a hard and fast limit can actually make sure that roulette players walk away with some decent winnings, or at the very least spend no more than the budget they’d set aside for themselves. That is an important component to walking away from the wheel as a winner.
