Fair Play in Taxing Offshore GamingThe Gambling Act of 2007, while well intentioned in its design to bring tax revenue in, has shown major flaws when it comes to offshore gaming operations. That may be changing very soon as the economic secretary reviews the taxation of offshore operations. The new taxation should reduce and possibly remove what has become a strain onUKbased gaming operators for sometime. Offshore operators were not responsible for taxes as most have moved their businesses to locations with less restrictive laws of taxation.
Should the government tax offshore operations in the same way, require the same licence for all casinos accepting wagers in the UK, then the playing ground should be made more even. The fifteen percent tax levied upon land based operations has been seen as a restriction that was just bad for business, forcing many to move operations to other countries. With the changes in the law, this may bring back those companies to a fairer and potentially less competitive homecoming.
